At Overview Answer House Foundation, we believe neighborhoods and communities are enriched when everyone in them participates to Overview Overview Answer House the fullest extent possible. We believe that citizenship should not be limited by the attainment of certain skills, but is a right that belongs to us all. We believe that with the right support, even people with complex disabilities can live successfully in their own homes.

We believe that this right can only be fully enjoyed when people have as much control over their day-to-day life as possible. And that includes living in one’s own home, with one’s own name on the lease. Such unfair treatment must be met with resistance, partnership and intentional understanding. We do not accept that the current situation for black and brown people is not about us, it is. We support Black Lives Matter, and we will continue to do our part in the fight for equality. We believe in care that is customized to each individual’s needs and desires, enabling everyone we support to live a life of choice, rather than circumstance.

Since our early days, this group of citizens has been at the bottom of the hierarchy of people who matter. People who have been segregated in institutions, used for eugenics experiments and shunned by the majority of society. Through our work, we are not only creating equality for people with disabilities, but we are also shining a light of hope for other marginalized people and communities. But talk to those people today, and they’ll tell you how their children have not just succeeded, but blossomed.

Initially, many parents and family members of the over 120 people Overview Answer House supports were, too. Their children had aged out of Hampton Roads’ special education system, and were ready for adult services and support. Many worried that cognitive limitations, medical challenges, behavioral issues, or other conditions, such as autism, would make it impossible for their loved ones to live safely in their own apartments. Up to 40 women and children are welcomed as guests each night in our clean, safe shelter. More than a roof over their head, our shelter is a place that provides a sense of safety and security and surrounds women with support needed to work on the root problems that led to homelessness.

Woodburn was born in Hampshire but left home at 16 and moved to Liverpool where she worked as a live-in cleaner. Our Center for Women and Children is one of the few local shelters to welcome children. Poverty and housing instability are especially harmful during early childhood, often causing problems in school. To combat these problems, children in our shelter are provided tutors, mentors and transportation.
