Support for Adults With Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities
She attended the GED graduation in May 2022 and gave the graduation speech. Janely, Alejandra’s 9-month-old-daughter, is also enrolled in the Early Learning Program. At first, Alejandra said, “I was hesitant because of bad experiences I had with babysitters for Janely, but I got to meet the staff and they’re really nice and I’m never far away from Janely which is really great”. Alejandra has also taken other classes including Parenting 101, Relationship Classes, and Self-Care classes. Stephanie’s last requirement was to find full-time employment. With support from our College & Career Program, she found a customer service position at PC’s for People, a non-profit organization that provides computers to low-income individuals (I love seeing the process come full circle in her life!).
Five Years Later: How Preble Street’s Response to COVID-19 Shaped Its Future

She is drawing every day to practice her skills while raising her lively, talkative and energetic little boy. Through classes at Strathmore House, Fatima learned how to set boundaries and establish healthy relationships. Strathmore House also helped her get a car, a paid internship with Jefferson County and an apartment. Life felt so intensely depressing that Fatima feared she would have a miscarriage. Her living situation with family was chaotic and unsafe all throughout her pregnancy, but at 16—with little support or encouragement—she gave birth to her son Julian. She dropped out of school in 10th grade and became a mom at age 16.
Stephanie grew up in generational poverty, became a mom as a teenager and dropped out of school. She was sleeping with her baby girl on a couch in a crowded mobile home. The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems. Established in 1990 out of the need for homeless services for women and children, Strathmore House serves over 5000 homeless and impoverished individuals and families in Hancock County each year. In addition, Strathmore House serves as the Front Door for rental housing assistance in Hancock County. She feels safe and is excited to provide an environment for Julian that is supportive and caring, two things she longed for as a child.
She is passionate about increasing accessibility to public meetings, telling stories from underrepresented communities and pitching funny merch ideas. Preble Street assumed operations of Strathmore House on Sunday, February 2, 2025, from Penobscot Community Health Center (PCHC). In fall 2023, PCHC had announced that due to financial considerations, it would close Strathmore House – its low-barrier 56-bed emergency shelter in Bangor – in fall 2024 unless another provider could take over operations. Transitional housing is temporary housing for the working homeless population and is set up to transition their residents to permanent housing.
The task force is the first formal action the county has taken Strathmore House Review on the crisis. Read our story about the task force — and internal squabbles over legal representation — here and the rest of our extensive coverage of the contamination crisis here. Moss told the Spokesman this was a waste of money and that he was punished for questioning the spending. Others in administration claimed Moss was checked out of his job and didn’t actually live in Spokane, which meant he frequently ghosted his staff and didn’t show up to work. High-quality professionally run shelters, like Preble Street Strathmore House, provide more than just a place to sleep for a night. They provide staff who are trained in trauma-informed care and harm reduction, housing navigation services, case management, healthy and nutritious meals, and more.
- Her family dynamics were difficult, and at an early age she felt neglected and left to fend for herself.
- Still, in her committee draft lists, she isn’t on a single committee with Zappone.
- Representation to address the broad range of civil legal issues encountered by survivors such as protection orders, child support, child custody, divorce, paternity, etc.
- I am proud to say Stephanie earned her high school diploma through one of our online high school partners.
Empowering Teen Moms
The BOCC will discuss the scope of a task force to address “forever chemicals” contamination on the West Plains, which residents of that area have been agitating for in recent months. The task force was proposed by County Commissioner Chris Jordan late last year. West Plains groundwater has been contaminated by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances for decades but local residents have only known about it for the last seven years.
More funds for extreme weather sheltering
Janelle and her boys eventually became homeless — sleeping in a car, on the ground, or in homeless shelters. Sleeping in a car was actually a good night because the ground was cold and the shelters were crowded, smelly and scary. She was 12 when her parents’ fights and addictions led them to split. Although Janelle and her brothers were already used to living in chaos, now they were left on the sidelines, trying to take care of themselves. Janelle ended up meeting an older boy – and they connected deeply as they shared stories from their rough childhoods.
A healthy future for them, and for their children
The board will hear a presentation about the district’s Native education program, which lists goals and outcomes of its program to improve the education of Indigenous students. The program emphasized outdoor education, project-based learning and culture. The presentation slides say the program has improved graduation rates by 20%, from 67% in 2016 to 87% in 2024. The board will host a hearing for the public to comment on a proposed general obligation bond that could pay for aging infrastructure not covered by a recent tax increase measure that voters have struck down. A bond is essentially a promise to debtors that the district will be able to raise the funds to cover anticipated spending. Haley’s appointments also include seating non-voting board members on committees to offer their opinions and perspective, a positive change from a board structure that usually doesn’t offer them many opportunities to offer input.
As a preteen, she was given freedom without the tools to navigate it. Landing in the wrong circle of friends, Fatima began smoking and drinking at age 10. Already struggling with little support, five months into her pregnancy, Fatima lost her brother to suicide. 24-hour crisis hotline support; onsite safe shelter and offsite hotel placement; basic necessities; crisis intervention and support; and life skills groups. 2024 was an eventful year for freshman City Council Member Al Merkel, and his colleagues want to talk about it!

Welcome to CIVICS, where we break down the week’s municipal meetings throughout the Inland Northwest, so you can get involved and speak out about the issues you care about. We believe in the power of every individual’s story and are here to help navigate the path to stability and self-sufficiency. Preble Street is excited to become a bigger part of the Bangor community and will continue to fill in the budget gaps with the private support from community members and other funders that help us keep the doors open.
Your support helps helps Preble Street provide shelter, stability, food, and hope for vulnerable Mainers!
This closure is coming after the city gave $1.2 million to Strathmore House in August of 2024 — paid for with money accumulated through Brown’s cost savings measures at the Trent Shelter — to keep their doors open. It’s Council Member Jonathan Bingle’s first meeting chairing the Urban Experience Committee, which we were informed of via a meme sent in by a city council staffer this morning. Bingle will be welcomed by a couple big pieces of information that are scheduled to be covered in the meeting. And remember, you can now testify for two minutes on agenda items at committee meetings! The contracts in the consent agenda tonight will be paid for with money remaining from the original $800,000 dip into 1590 funds, city spokesperson Erin Hut told RANGE. Hut added that no additional draws from 1590 funds for inclement weather beds would be necessary. Her family dynamics were difficult, and at an early age she felt neglected and left to fend for herself.
